With the romance of the season lingering over the city post Valentine's Day, staging a one -act classic like Love Letters takes the exhilaration to another level. The critically acclaimed play, which traces the lifelong correspondence between a lawyer and an artist, is one of the most memorable of English plays ever performed, with textures that are both tender and moving.

Brought to the city by Concern India Foundation, Love Letters, directed by Rahul da Cunha, will feature noted artists like Rajit Kapur and Shernaz Patel. Ever since it first debuted in 1988, the play written by A R Gurney has been staged by many theatre groups across the world, and the beauty of the play lies in the words written in the love letters and those left unsaid. It takes the audience through a lifetime of experiences of two lovers, from the age of six to 60, that are sometimes poignant, often funny and always deeply romantic. Their correspondence follows a bittersweet path of boarding schools, marriage, children, divorce and missed opportunities in life.

Says actor Rajit Kapur, who is one of the protagonists in the play, "We've been doing the play for 17 years now, but the magic never dies. I find that I discover a new moment with every performance. There are so many tender moments that are strung together in the play. As for the audience response, it has always been different each time. Some weep because they found certain moments very touching, some remember their own past loves, but almost always, they come and tell us that they loved the play."

Kapur, who is well known for his award- winning portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi in the movie The Making of the Mahatma, is also remembered for his portrayal of Bengali detective Byomkesh Bakshi in a television series of the same name directed by Basu Chatterjee.

Despite being a film and television actor, Rajit loves the medium of theatre. "It is such a powerful way of interacting with the audience," he says. "The vibes are always different and you connect with the audience in a way you never can with a camera."

The play is a fund-raising drive in aid of Concern India Foundation. "The proceeds from this play will go towards our many projects, 13 of which are in Bangalore," says Pampa Chowdhury, branch manager of the foundation. "Ours is a charitable, non-profit trust that works in the areas of education, health and community development."

The play will be held on February 19 at Chowdiah Memorial Hall at 7:30 pm.
